21,000 companies got venture funding since 2001, but only 380 made it to an IPO (Initial Public Offering), according to Josh Kopelman at First Round Capital. Silicon Valley super angel Ron Conway said that 70% of the companies in his portfolio went out of business, total loss, in the last bust 2001 to 2003, also known as "Nuclear Winter in Silicon Valley". However, they kept writing checks to fund startups...and have done amazingly well.
